On June 28, 2018, a gunman entered the offices of The Capital Gazette and killed five employees. Two others were injured while trying to escape.

On that day, one tragic event connected hundreds of lives.

This project features 28 of them.

Phil Davis

Capital Gazette Journalist Survivor of the Newsroom Attack

Phil Davis began working as a journalist at the Capital Gazette in 2016. He has since been promoted to the The Baltimore Sun. Phil is one of the six survivors of June 28th, 2018 attack on The Capital Gazette newsroom.

Maria Hiaasen

Wife of Editor Rob Hiaasen

Maria Hiaasen is the wife of slain Capital Gazette associate editor and columnist Rob Hiaasen. Rob Hiaasen joined the Capital Gazette staff in 2010. Maria and Rob married in 1985 and have three children. She has had two of Rob’s books published posthumously.

Rachael Pacella

Capital Gazette Journalist Survivor of the Newsroom Attack

Journalist Rachael Pacella joined the Capital Gazette staff in April 2017. She has covered many beats during her time at the paper including the environment, Naval Academy and the City of Bowie. Rachael is one of the six survivors of June 28th, 2018 attack on The Capital Gazette newsroom.

Andrea Chamblee

Widow of Journalist John McNamara

Andrea Chamblee is the wife of slain Capital Gazette sports journalist and Gazette editor John McNamara. John joined the newspaper in 1994. They married in 1985. Andrea has turned her grief into action for gun violence prevention.
